Goals and Objectives

The Divan/Petra University program is designed to help students learn an important world language in Amman, a Middle Eastern city with deep roots in ancient history that currently bustles with modern urban life.

The goals of the program are:

  • to teach students the rich Arabic language so that they have immediate usage of the language;
  • to help bridge the gap between the two different cultures of East and West through the cultural component of the course;
  • to assist young leaders with unique qualities to take initiative.

Program objectives are:

  • to promote cultural understanding. We convene a coalition of young American and Jordanian students ages 18 – 30 who address issues regarding misconceptions between the two cultures. Participants are geographically and ideologically diverse, coming from various fields of study such as business administration, political science, and international relations. Jordanian families in Amman host American students, offering a significant opportunity to experience the culture of Jordan and the Middle East. If a host family is not available, students live in furnished apartments in well-chosen communities.
  • to teach  Arabic language. Non-Arabic-speaking international students learn to speak classical Arabic as well as colloquial speech for the purpose of both official and day-to-day use. Teaching the language through immersion in the culture enhances speech clarity, confidence, listening skills, verbal expression, conversation  and grammar.

Participants are encouraged to speak and interact with Jordanians. Classes are limited to ten students each to provide more personalized attention . Students are expected to conduct some workshops and presentations as part of the activities organized by the university.
