Date and Duration

The life time maximum duration for the Trainee is 18 months which the J-1 visa grants for the participating students or exchange visitors. A Trainee may participate in multiple Trainee Programs; however, the total length of participation may not exceed 18 months.

The Average length of training is currently six to eight months. The proposed length of each training program will be considered within the context of the applicant's background, the training objectives and activates, and the training environment offered by the Host Company. In evaluating the length of program, the sponsor will consider also the following:

  • University Endorsement Of The Specific Length Of Training.

  • Documentation From A Host Company On Its Standard Training Program Length.

  • The Ties To Home Country.

Trainee programs may begin at any time of the year. The trainee is allowed to enter the US up to ten days prior to the training start date listed on the DS-2019 form, a legal document stating the duration and the purpose of the program and allowing you to get important documentation during your stay in the US. The Trainee is allowed the maximum 30-day grace period to travel in the US after the program end date listed in the DS-2019 form. The Trainee is not to train or to work during this time; it is an opportunity to stay in the US to experience the culture.
